I’ll admit, they are addictive and one of my guilty pleasures, especially when I’m feeling sluggish or uninspired in the kitchen.
But while occasional indulgence won’t kill you, there’s mounting evidence that microwaving these Nissin-brand noodles can cause cancer.
So, how true is this? Can microwaving cup noodles cause cancer?

You see, in addition to their low nutritional value, Cup Noodles are high in sodium and contain MSG, an additive found in many processed foods.
For example, 73 g of this popular instant noodle dish contains 1,280 mg of sodium, which is more than half the recommended daily intake for most adults. Experts warn that too much salt can increase blood pressure and lead to heart disease or stroke.
Furthermore, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer found in many packaged foods, has been linked to several health conditions. While it is FDA-approved as safe, concerns abound over its links to headaches, nausea, high blood pressure, weakness, and chest pain.
So, the real question is, should you make them your go-to meal?
My professional advice, consume your noodles in moderation. Packaged food has indeed become our generation’s favorite form of sustenance. However, eating them in excess will undoubtedly affect your health.
Is It Safe to Microwave Cup Noodles?
Absolutely not! Cup Noodles’ packaging is constructed of Styrofoam, which melts under high microwave temperatures leaching toxins into the noodles.
So, what exactly is Styrofoam, and why should I care if it melts in my cup of noodles?
Well, Styrofoam is a petroleum-based product that contains styrene monomer, a chemical used in the production of plastics such as polystyrene. It is commonly used for house insulation, but its application in food service ware has expanded over the years due to its insulation properties and lightweight.
However, this material can melt and release styrene into the noodles when heated at a high temperature (such as in microwaves). Unfortunately, the World Health Organization classifies styrene as a possible human carcinogen, meaning prolonged exposure can cause cancer.
Furthermore, the noodles are clearly labeled with a manufacturer warning not to use them in the microwave or oven. At the same time, they offer alternatives for best and safe practices to turn your noodles into a healthy meal.

To test this theory, I gathered three noodle packages from the local supermarket and microwaved them one at a time. The first was constructed of ceramic, the second aluminum, and the third Styrofoam.
The first package, made of ceramic, did not melt or emit harmful chemicals. In fact, the noodles came out tender, moist, and flavourful with an appealing scent. They were comparable in taste to those prepared on the stovetop.
The second test involved the aluminum package. Surprisingly, it performed similarly to ceramic packaging, with no signs of melting or harmful chemical emissions. However, after 12 seconds, it started to sparkle and smoke like fireworks, necessitating the termination of testing.
The last test subjected the Styrofoam package to 2 minutes of microwaving. Remember, this is the same package that holds Cup Noodle. Like the other two tests, there was no sign of melting or releasing toxic chemicals in the first few seconds.
However, my suspicions became warranted as the temperatures rose past 158 degrees Fahrenheit. It began to melt, and I noticed a sharp, unpleasant odor permeating the air. Again, I halted the experiment before risking harm.
My recommendations: Always ascertain that your noodles packaging is labeled “safe for microwave” to avoid possible safety hazards.

Unfortunately, overheating can turn these delicious morsels from instant into soggy mush. Trust me; nothing is worse than having your favorite microwaved meal turn into a soupy mess. On the flip side, undercooking renders them crunchy, chewy, and unappealing.
As a result, finding the sweet spot between soggy and crunchy noodles can be tricky. My advice is to lean towards microwaving your noodles for less time rather than long. After all, if they are too stiff, you can always cook them for a little longer.
However, depending on the power level of your microwave and the size of the noodles you’re microwaving, the time may vary. Also, read the package instructions for precise cooking times and adjust accordingly.
How To Microwave Cup Noodles (The Right Way)
Before you toss away your Cup Noodles in the dustbin, below is a simple step-by-step guide to microwaving them safely:
- Select a microwave-safe bowl, preferably ceramic or glass, and fill it with a cup of water.
- Place the microwave-safe bowl of water in the microwave and heat it on high for 2 minutes or until the water boils.
- Carefully remove the hot water from the microwave, making sure not to burn yourself.

Cooking them on the stove, for example, is as simple as boiling water. To do so, heat some water in a pot until it’s boiling, then add the noodles. Wait for 3 minutes before turning off the burner, stirring occasionally. Add the flavor packet sparingly to your noodles but in moderation.
Another option is to boil water in an electric kettle before pouring it over the dried noodles. Allow for 3 minutes before stirring occasionally. Avoid overcooking your noodles, as this will only result in a soggy and chewy texture.
If you’re not into either of these two methods, you’ll be surprised to know that you can make Cup noodles in lukewarm water. Yes, cold water! Simply soak them in cold water with the lid on for 15-30 minutes. Once soft and al dente, drain the water from the cup and enjoy your homemade noodles while they are still cold.
